COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR
INTRODUCTION
An exclusive big five game reserve located near Vaalwater in Limpopo is seeking to employ a Communications Coordinator with two years in writing or journalism in a conservation or eco-tourism related environment.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
- To develop a Communications Strategy to be implemented at all levels of communication within the organization. Which includes but is not limited to the following:
- Develop, maintain and deploy a communications strategy to promote and market the brand image of Welgevonden Game Reserve.
- Ensure a consistent and applied brand image relating to all communication with both internal and external role players.
- Raise the level of awareness of Welgevonden as a top eco-tourism and game viewing destination while at the same time being leaders and innovators in conservation management and research.
- To promote and keep Welgevonden’s brand and name in the public sphere on a regular basis by regular targeted material to the variety of groups whom Welgevonden wishes to engage with on some level be they potential eco-tourists, investors, conservationists, researchers, staff, owners and the public at large.
- Document happenings on the Reserve and maintain a library of all media material – including photo, film, media releases and articles, etc. for use in promotional activities.
- Assist in the development of a marketing strategy for the Reserve and support the implementation of thereof promoting Welgevonden as a top eco-tourism and game viewing destination while at the same time being leaders and innovators in conservation management and research;
- Assist in or/facilitate fund raising initiatives for the Conservation Innovation Fund, Welgevonden Environmental Awareness Programme, area related security projects, etc. that benefit Welgevonden either directly or indirectly and keep funders; donors; interested and involved parties up to date with developments;
- Be involved with all aspects of the management of the Reserve so as to be informed of the thinking, happenings and functioning of the Reserve in order to be able to communicate such appropriately.
MAJOR TASK HEADINGS:
Public Relations and Communication
- Manage and develop strategic internal and external communication, including press releases, media footage, newsletters and corporate presentations;
- Write and edit content as required, including communications being sent from within the
- business to clients, Members, Lodges, Lodge and Reserve staff, collaborators, etc.;
- Liaise with media, manage media relations requests and carry out press events, where required act as the primary contact point for media agency;
- Create regular content and news reports for social media portals, the Welgevonden website, newsletters, media releases, etc.;
- Manage content on relevant web portals (Google My Business, TripAdvisor etc.)
- Manage content and all social media related communication and ensure the Reserve’s social media policy is adhered to by relevant Reserve related entities;
- Manage the Welgevonden Website the content and updates thereof, maintenance and security thereof;
- Document happenings on the Reserve;
- Ensure application of the brand guidelines in all internal and external media and communications;
- Ensure the Reserve adheres to online related laws and regulations and promote good business practice.
Marketing
- Assist in the design of the annual marketing strategy for Welgevonden Game Reserve;
- Support the implementation of marketing plans, and develop tactical marketing activities and campaigns including:
- Liaising with digital marketing service providers to provide suitable content for digital
- marketing campaigns.
- Managing Google analytics and Search Console to assess efficiency and effectiveness of digital marketing campaigns
- Advertising on social media platforms
- Deliver creative, innovative and effective marketing tools.
Welgevonden Environmental Awareness Programme
- Oversight of budget and financial administration
- Assist with formulation of strategy, time management, logistics and general vision of the programme
- Promote and communicate the programme to the funders, potential funders, Members and public in general.
- Assist in sourcing funding for the programme.
Other
- Develop and maintain a library of the Reserve media footage – including photo, film, media releases and articles, etc.;
- Assist in the development of a communications and marketing strategy for the Conservation
- Innovation Fund and assist in relevant fundraising opportunities (funding proposals,
presentations, etc);
- Write up agendas and minutes for respective Marketing Committee, Welgevonden Scientific
- Advisory Committee (WSAC) and other Reserve related meetings;
- Ensure satisfaction by attending to requests and enquiries courteously and efficiently;
- Attend network sessions, seminars, etc. where required;
- Participate in general activities such as management duty, and assist during reserve emergencies such as fires, floods and animal breakouts; and
- Any other activity that may be required for the benefit of the Reserve.
REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY FOR THE JOB:
Education:
Minimum:
- Matric and relevant courses in Microsoft Office suites and graphics and publishing.
Ideal:
- Relevant Bachelor’s degree in a conservation related field and/or in Communication
- and/or in Marketing.
Experience:
Minimum:
- Two years in writing or journalism, public relations and social media.
Ideal:
- Two years in writing or journalism in a conservation or eco-tourism related environment managing a company’s public relations, social media and communication preferably in a wildlife environment with the big 5.

- The incumbent is expected to be an exceptional creative writer and as such the incumbent must have excellent written communication skills with an adaptable writing ability, suited to report and popular article writing.
Verbal:
- The incumbent is expected to communicate verbally with members and colleagues on a regular basis and as such must have excellent verbal communication skills.
Competencies and characteristics:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and the Adobe Creative Cloud Package (Lightroom, Photoshop,
- InDesign, Premier Pro, etc.);
- Proficient in photography and basic graphics design;
- Content creator and writing;
- Basic back-end website development knowledge or a willingness to spend time acquiring these skills
- Strong conservation knowledge/background;
- Suitably skilled to work in a dangerous game environment;
- Cultural Awareness;
- A good command of the English language, with a flair for writing, becoming to the Welgevonden image.
